Friend Phantom

Friend Phantom

Friend Phantom, the head of the Poltava unit of PS, has died. Poltava. A road traffic accident. He together with the traffic patrol was following a car, which did not stop at the checkpoint. A policeman and our Phantom have died.

I perfectly knew him and his wife - Altair. The first group of UVC reconnaissance was our team and the team of Bars- Phantom, which soon merged into one. Quiet, intelligent, high school teacher suddenly revealed as a resourceful, discreet, cautious first-class front-line spy and as a gifted trainer for beginners. Tanya- Altair was a caring mother for undisciplined reconnaissance officers. She taught inexperienced youth to shoot. They had a very happy marriage and three adult children. After an injury received in a battle for Saur Mohyla, he could not return immediately to the front. When the summer was over, Tanya, also a high school teacher, returned to the work. They both really hoped that we would be legalized; then they could fight as a UVC soldiers, not losing their jobs. They returned to Poltava; Phantom started some organizational work, Altair collected money and things to help UVC. And this happened. In our time, he died not in a battle...

Better than any obituary - Alla Mehel’s essay ‘Phantom and Tanya’: ‘Phantom was like, excuse me, the fucking end - always close by without being noticed. That is why he received this nickname! If Phantom would be offered to play a ghost in a film, the film would be a bestseller, and the make-up for actors would not be required. Many terrorist-separatists got cold feet when in front of them - silently as a ghost – suddenly appeared Phantom. This slim tall man (in peacetime was a teacher) moves like a shadow. So if you stand in line at the cafeteria and suddenly hear behind, speaking in undertones: "Good afternoon..." - Phantom came quietly. He would be completely unseen without Tanya. Phantom and Tanya always go together. They are inseparable like two gloves - left and right. What Phantom has too little, Tanya has enough and vice versa. He was thin and tall, like a shadow in the setting sun, she- as the sun’s zenith - with rounded, distinctly feminine forms. He had an ascetic thin face with deep mimic wrinkles and a little big, as a child, ears. She has a beautiful black hair (as is written in the books - as a raven’s wing), expressive handsome face, a little similar in type to my favourite - Zinaida Serebyakova. He was taciturn, rarely smiling. She is friendly, always calm, easily and naturally get to know people. And this people could rely on her, and, in fact, on Phantom, completely and unconditionally. Fighting Brotherhood is precisely about these two. They are priceless in a battle. There was only a price in the tens of thousands of green, which is named by the enemy for their heads. They were super skilled diversionists. Phantom knew all kinds of weapons, Tanya is a sniper. ‘In secret places sniper comes at least three hours before the fight’ - says Tanya to newcomers – ‘during this time he/she listens and smells about. Smells and sounds penetrate him/her and become like a part of his being. The only way to know that an enemy is coming is the sound or smell’. I'm starting to understand the nature of Tanya’s surprising calm. She is calm as if she straightens palm and bears full glass of water and the water does not move. This deep inner peace is needed for successful sniper in a fight with an enemy, to make an accurate shot and not to expose her. Tanya is a nightmare for beginners. After all, she is - in ambush with her gun - a surprise that nasty Phantom promised to newcomers at the beginning. The task for them is just to come alive to their destinations. Reckless soldiers run through thicket, without hesitation that all sorts of surprises are waiting for them in the bushes - stretching symbolizes enemy’s bombs, wandering shadow of Phantom and sniper Tanya in her well-camouflaged hiding place. ‘Stop, come out on the trail!’ - a cry in the forest is being heard- all of you are two-hundred! Why are you going through the forest as elks?! What are you stomping like elephants?! Newcomers sadly go to a lawn. Failed. Phantom came quietly. Tanya smiles and winks: it’s ok; they will be fine in a battle. There is death, but here, at the site, only a disgruntled cry of Phantom. ‘
